Property will participate in worldwide initiative
NATIONAL HARBOR, Md., April 9, 2020—Over the past week, The Capital Wheel has had a red glowing heart image as part of an international movement to show love and support for hospitality workers and others who have been laid off in this difficult time and it has also had a green heart image to show compassion.
On Thursday, April 9, National Harbor will light up in blue to show in solidarity with communities around the world. “The initiative is a way to say thank you to all of those fighting COVID-19 on the front lines,” explained Jackie Saunders, AVP of marketing at National Harbor. “This effort is part of a massive ‘thank you’ to all of the healthcare professionals, first responders and essential workers who are risking their own health to save lives.”
In addition to The Capital Wheel turning blue, Fleet Street lights and lights outlining the buildings at National Harbor will all be blue.
While National Harbor’s Capital Wheel and waterfront area remain closed, the blue lights can be seen by those driving across the bridge, on the property and on social media. “We’re asking our residents to post their photos of the Wheel as they see it from their homes,” explained Saunders. The international event social media handle is #LightItBlue. National Harbor can be tagged via #NationalHarbor.
The lighting is scheduled to take place around 8 p.m. and to coincide with another round of #ClapBecauseWeCare—with communities all clapping from their homes, windows and balconies at the same time to show their appreciation for healthcare and essential workers around the world.
Visitors are welcome to drive through National Harbor to see the lights. They are encouraged to stay in their vehicles and also take advantage of the many restaurants at National Harbor providing takeout.
