Prince George’s County Executive Alsobrooks to attend MahoganyBooks Grand Opening and Black Books Matter Block Party at National Harbor
(National Harbor, MD, August 5, 2021) —Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks will join MahoganyBooks co-owners Derrick and Ramunda Young, to celebrate the grand opening of its flagship bookstore with a Black Books Matter Block Party at National Harbor located in Prince George’s County, Maryland. County Executive Alsobrooks will also issue a special proclamation during the celebration. MahoganyBooks will also be joined by Prince George’s County Councilmember Monique Anderson-Walker (District 8), CEO of Prince George’s County Maryland Library System Roberta Phillips, and Founder of Black Classic Press Paul Coates. The event will take place on Saturday, August 7, 2021, from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 12:00 p.m.
“MahoganyBooks is excited to become the newest destination in Prince George’s County for Black literature. For over 13 years, our mission is to promote reading, writing, and cultural awareness as tools to improve self-esteem, self-love, and ultimately our communities. We will continue to provide a space that elevates Black authors and Black books of the diaspora,” stated Derrick Young, co-owner and co-founder of MahoganyBooks.
“This has been a phenomenal year for MahoganyBooks. We started the year hosting President Barack Obama during our virtual book club, and now we’re opening our flagship store in Prince George’s County, MD. Our upcoming grand opening is a testament to the support of our MahoganyBooks family,” said Ramunda Young, co-owner and co-founder of MahoganyBooks.
“We are Prince George’s Proud to welcome MahoganyBooks to Prince George’s County, and we are excited that they chose our County as the location for their second bookstore,” said Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks. “MahoganyBooks has been an important leader in Black literature in our region and across the nation, and we look forward to working with them to help inspire the next generation of readers, writers and leaders in our County.”
