Governor Larry Hogan Places Maryland’s First Sports Wager at MGM National Harbor with BetMGM
NATIONAL HARBOR, MD (Dec. 9, 2021) – MGM National Harbor and BetMGM launched sports betting in the State of Maryland earlier today with a “First Bet” event at its new marquee entertainment destination, BetMGM Sportsbook & Lounge. Maryland Governor Larry Hogan, Washington Football Legend Joe Theismann and Prince George’s County Council Chair Calvin Hawkins marked the occasion placing the first sports wagers in the state.
Hogan remarked while placing the wager, “This is a win-win for Maryland. This is a big day at MGM in Maryland. So, this is a really long shot, but it’s a big win. This is the Washington (Football Team) to win the NFC, Baltimore to win the AFC. So an all-Maryland Super Bowl in LA!”
The wagers placed by each individual were as follows:
Hogan: All Maryland Super Bowl. Futures bet on Washington to win the NFC AND Baltimore to win the AFC.
Theismann: Belichick vs. Brady Super Bowl. Futures bet on Tampa Bay to win the NFC AND New England to win the AFC.
Hawkins: Washington to beat Dallas this Sunday
Theismann commented, “I am a historian about the game. I love the history of the game of football and I think it would be appropriate. So I picked the New England Patriots to play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It will be Bill Belichick versus Tom Brady in the next Super Bowl. It is a historic bet.”
As a historian of the game and enjoying football as much as I do, one of the things we all talked about at the beginning of the year was how well will Bill Belichick do without Tom Brady…So I thought it would be appropriate to make a bet looking into the future to see what New England and Tampa Bay might be like.”
The trio were joined by BetMGM Chief Compliance Officer Noreen Fierro, MGM National Harbor Chief Financial Officer Max Fisher, MGM National Harbor Senior Vice President of Marketing and Gaming Operations, and Chris Gumiela, Vice President of BetMGM Marketing for MGM Resorts International. The group cut the ribbon to the BetMGM Sportsbook & Lounge, a state-of-the-art sports watching experience featuring wraparound jumbotron video walls, high-tech betting options as well as mobile ordering-and-delivery for food and beverages.
Hawkins concluded, “My first bet was on the Washington Football Team, and I made it immediate, that they will beat the Dallas Cowboys this weekend.”
In the final days leading up to today’s official first bets, the Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency required two days of controlled sports betting testing, with all revenue going to charity. MGM National Harbor chose to contribute their two-day total to Junior Achievement of Greater Washington in the amount of $20,066. Junior Achievement of Greater Washington offers financial literacy, work readiness and entrepreneurship programs to youth in Prince George’s County, MD and throughout the region to prepare them for life in the real world.
The BetMGM Sportsbook & Lounge is open and accepting sports wagers seven days a week. For more information, please visit www.mgmnationalharbor.com and www.betmgm.com.
